If someone relies upon a shocking hair colour or body mod to gain the notice of others…

If someone needs to reveal their chest (or chest hair) or legs to keep the attention on them…

If someone talks about niche and narrow interests or, like, “props” (sorry) on your first date with them…..

It makes me wonder about the “who” of the person, about what they tend to add to the conversation (at work or with chums, or in general)–and about what THEY think of their own value.

(aka “am I JUST ‘the chick with the purple hair and nose ring’ to my colleagues, or ‘the girl who updated the company handbook last year and made Snack Attack Fridays and Polo Shirt Mondays mandatory’ ?” aka “if I NEED a gimmick to ‘be relevant, then… who am I, really? Do I matter? Or just my outer shell or persona? Does the “real me” matter to others?“)

Well, my reply is that the real you is a GEM–a hidden treasure!

Why do songs About Jesus suddenly have to be catchy or “impactful” (aka Liver Shivers Aplenty) and in a certain style in order to make us “want” to listen to them?

Why should we NEED to sound like the world (or have Christian Award Shows (TM) in order to “enjoy” our “worship time” ? (I do realise how hypocrisyness this sounds, since half my recent music sounds like badly-done techno.)

I’d both counsel and challenge you to spend some time this week singing To Him–without instrumental accompaniment. Sing in the shower. Sing over your oatmeal. Sing in the middle of a tearful rant against the government/your significant other/whatever else people today seem vexed about half the time.

We don’t need to “rock out” in order to sing To The PRECIOUS Rock On Which We Stand and have our Firm Foundation.

It should be noted that fun hair colours, thoughtful planning of continued marriage maintenance, and/or AWESOME musical arrangements/effects/plugins are not BAD. Needing gimmicks to do the heavy lifting, though–especially all the time and 100 per cent–well… Just work on creating a firm foundation, friend.
