As an American Christian who is married to a Christian who was born outside of the US and raised both abroad and here, I have seen through my wife and her family the way they understand sovereignty and the way they treat it that we Americans don’t understand it at all the way it should be understood.
To my knowledge, most Americans think of the royal family in the UK or some other monarchy when they think of sovereignty.
Or, they think of a nations status as sovereign.
For those who don’t know, when a nation declares itself sovereign it is saying that it has the supreme, independent authority to govern itself, its people, and its territory without external interference, controlling its own laws, resources, and destiny, forming the bedrock of international relations where states respect each other’s autonomy. It signifies internal control (making laws) and external independence (not being subject to another country).
It saddens me that America was built on Christian principles, and now, the sovereignty of God is all but ignored and certainly not fully understood.
The majority of Americans understand what sovereignty means when it comes to political things, and I refuse to believe that such a mass number of them have no clue what it means when referring to the one true sovereign, the creator of the universe, God himself.
I want to take a moment to go over exactly what God’s sovereignty looks like. It’s actually vastly simple to understand.
OK, let’s take the example of the sovereign nation. As previously mentioned, that means it has the right to govern itself, make its own laws and do all that stuff.
The sovereignty that God holds is infinitely more far-reaching and all-encompassing in a very literal sense. There is none more independent than God, there is none with greater right and authority to govern than God.
The universe is his territory and we are his people. His word is law. He controls all that we see because every single bit of it was created by him and for him. No one can tell him how to run his creation, how to govern his territory. Many have tried, and they will continue to, but each and every one of them has failed and will continue to fail.
But why is it that Americans in particular have such a hard time understanding God’s sovereignty? I personally think it’s because we are taught a skewed non-Christian view of freedom.
The declaration of independence itself states:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness“.
Notice, that it mentions that we are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness being among them.
Someone who has truly read and studied the word of God would understand that our entitlement to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness that is mentioned in the declaration of independence is actually a search for God.
Why do I say this?
Because God IS life, God IS liberty, and God IS happiness.
If we accept his sovereignty and live as he asks us to, we find life, liberty and happiness. We find that our lives have meaning and we feel fulfilled.
The nations of this world need to step down off of their high horses, especially us Americans.
We need to take the blinders off and really pay attention.
We need to realize that we are not the sovereign ones. No nation is truly sovereign. No people is truly sovereign. No person is truly sovereign.
Whether we like it or not, we will bow either now or later to the true sovereign of all, Lord Jesus Christ.
“every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord”
So I ask you, reader, are you accepting his sovereignty today?
Will you bow before him today willingly or do so later when you don’t have a choice?
