Healing or Stealing?

It’s not that Isaiah 53 is about spiritual healing instead of physical healing, tho it is.

It’s not the part about Paul asking for the removal of his thorn in the flesh, and God’s exhortation that his strength is made perfect in Paul’s weakness.

It’s not that God doesn’t owe anyone healing or an explanation, tho that’s true.

It’s not that God has a plan that we can’t see, tho that’s true too.

It’s not even about the fact that Jesus healed people before he was crucified.

It’s that he is God and can heal anything at any time.

And that his name is the name above all names and has more power in it than do the stripes on his back.

One drop of his blood is enough to save us from all sins, and that’s where the stripes come in; that’s the spiritual healing that Isaiah 53 is all about.

But in terms of healing, physical healing, it’s his name that does that. It’s his name that drives out demons. And the name that terrorize them is the name of that comforts me when I’m in my sick bed… regardless of whether I’m there because I’m a bad patient OR because God will be using my illness for His Own purposes (the strengthening of my faith, the testing of my trust of him, someone else’s salvation when they see that I still love him, ala “though he slay me yet will I serve him.”)
