The “angel of grief” statue

The “angel of sorrow” statue

Have any of you seen the angel of sorrow statue?

It’s usually found as part of a monument on a grave. It’s an angel kneeling at a pedestal. Its arms flat on the pedestal or in some position that denotes sorrow, it’s face not visible because it’s resting its head on those lowered arms, wings also down and drooping, seemingly under the weight of all the grief the angel is feeling.

Here’s an example…

I just realized how frightening this monument is.

God’s word says that it is appointed for men to die once and then to face judgment. Specifically in Hebrews 9:27.

It’s that simple line of scripture that makes me wonder why the angel weeps.

Angels know that all humans are going to die.

They also know that not every human is going to make it to heaven when they do die, so to me, the statue has a much more terrifying meaning that brings about more sorrow than could ever be imagined.

For those of us who believe God’s word, for those of us who follow Jesus… When we pass from this world, angels will not weep, but instead they will rejoice.

So… the only way that an angel would weep over the grave of a human in soul-crushing sorrow would be if that human was doomed to spend eternity in hell.

So to me… This statue isn’t crying over the earthly death of a body, but instead the death of a lost soul. The second death… the soul trapped in eternal hellfire.

All of you who are reading this who truly follow Jesus, pray for your families, pray for your friends, pray for everyone you know…

Pray for those you don’t know.

Spread the gospel of Jesus Christ, as we are called to by the great commission. (Matthew 28:16-20).

And all of you who are reading this who don’t follow Jesus… I beg you to reconsider.

Don’t let your soul be the next one an angel cries over.
