While out to breakfast with my wife this morning, I started thinking about the sovereignty of God.

I wasn’t questioning it, rather coming to terms with the fact that it not only exists, but is above all things.

As many of you might know from reading things I’ve wrote here on http://metanoiameans.com, I am a fairly new believer in our Lord Jesus.

It’s now been approximately two years since I gave my life to Christ genuinely.

I have noticed that I do at times struggle with the sovereignty of God. I have learned to ask him in prayer about everything in my life. From things about my marriage, family, health and finances all the way down to what color socks I should wear on a given day and what I should eat.

I have also learned that I don’t always like the answers he gives because they go against what I want.

The most important thing to learn, though is that even though he will sometimes say things we don’t want to hear, they are what’s best in that particular situation for us as individuals.

He might put someone in the exact same situation as you and allow them to do something that you weren’t allowed to.

Why? Because their situation is not exactly the same as yours. They are a different person. They have different strengths. They have different weaknesses.

They have different skills.

They have a different set of knowledge.

They may be closer to god in their daily life than you; they may be further away from him in their daily life than you.

There are many reasons why he does what he does and I have learned that understanding and accepting his sovereignty over us means accepting those answers, even if we don’t like—or understand them.

We are God’s creations before we are saved, and we are his children after; in both places, he wants what’s best for us, and that is himself.

He will never lead us down a path that brings us further away from him.

He will only ever lead us down a path that brings us closer to him.

Before understanding sovereignty, we must first understand that.  

I thank the Lord every day that he is kind, gentle and merciful when it comes to me.

I at times react unfavorably when I am restricted from doing something I want to do or told to do something I don’t want to do by him.

He has every right to smite each and every one of us for living in the ways of disobedience that we do at times.

He has the power to eradicate our entire existence in a single microsecond or less.

Yet, the Lord, our God does not do these things. Instead, he is kind, loving and patient with us. Like a father is with his child. (According to The Holy Bible.)

It’s through our lives that he teaches us to be the people he wants us to be.

It’s through our lives that he teaches us to be the people that he made us to be; it is through our lives that he grows us into the eternal children of God that we are supposed to be.

However, this wondrous transformation cannot happen until you both understand and accept his sovereignty over your life.

You must let go of the version of your life that you envision and embrace that He Alone Is truth, and that that he wrote out a detailed plan for you and your entire life before the beginning of time.

Will there be difficulties? yes.

Will there be pain? Yes.

Will there be sorrows, trials, tribulations, and any other manner of test?

Yes, this life is a proving ground.

This life is meant to test us, push us to our limits and break the incorrect thought that says our lives are ours to control.

This life is the kiln in which God forms his masterpieces.

He is the potter, we are the clay.

He will make form and shape us into what he wants us to be.

It is only when we accept and live by his sovereignty that we can become masterpieces—creations of great beauty that he delights in, adores and will treasure in his glorious kingdom…forever!
